My daughter asked me to take care of my grandson for two weeks, saying she had to leave unexpectedly for a work trip. Though it seemed a bit last-minute, I was always happy to spend time with my grandson, so I agreed without hesitation. She dropped him off with a large bag full of belongings and rushed to catch her flight.
Nothing seemed unusual until I opened the bag. Inside were clothes for fall, winter, and spring, along with almost all of the childโs toys and medications. It didnโt look like a bag packed for just two weeks. It almost seemed like she didnโt plan on coming backโฆ
I tried calling her repeatedly, but she never answered. In the weeks that followed, I cried every day, worried and confused, until suddenly, I finally received a video call

In the weeks that followed, I cried every day, worried and confused, until suddenly, I finally received a video call.
When I saw her name flash on the screen, my heart leapt. With shaky hands, I answered the call, and there she wasโmy daughter, looking tired and worn but somehow at peace.
โMomโฆโ she began, her voice soft and distant. I barely held back tears as relief mixed with an overwhelming need for answers.
โWhere have you been?โ I demanded, my voice breaking. โYou disappeared! You left your son with me and didnโt even answer my calls. Do you have any idea how worried Iโve been?โ
She looked down, unable to meet my gaze. โIโm so sorry, Mom. I never meant to hurt you or him. I justโฆ I needed to get away, to figure things out.โ
โFigure what out?โ I asked, struggling to understand.
Her eyes filled with tears. โThings have been bad for me, really bad. I havenโt told you because I didnโt want you to worry. Iโve been struggling with a lot, and I knew I couldnโt be a good mother to himโnot in the state I was in. I thought if I could get away, maybeโฆ maybe I could get myself together.โ
โWhere are you now?โ I asked, still trying to process her words, wondering if sheโd truly thought about the impact of her actions.
โIโm in a place thatโs helping me. Iโm getting counseling and support,โ she said, her voice steadier now. โTheyโve helped me see things more clearly. I know it was wrong to just leave like that, and Iโm sorry. But I want to get better so that I can be there for him, for both of you.โ
As much as I was angry and hurt, I could see the desperation in her eyes, the raw pain sheโd been hiding. After a long pause, I sighed, gathering my thoughts. โI understand,โ I said quietly. โI donโt agree with how you handled this, but Iโm glad youโre seeking help.โ
We talked for a while longer, and she shared her plans to continue her treatment and come back once she was strong enough to be the mother her son needed. It would take time, but she assured me she was committed.
When the call ended, I felt a strange mix of sadness and hope. I hugged my grandson tightly, promising him silently that weโd get through this together, and that one day, his mother would returnโstronger and ready to love him fully.
